Mateusz Klich rediscovered his goalscoring touch this weekend as he netted a brace against Middlesbrough in Leeds’ 4-0 win over Jonathan Woodgate’s side.
Boro weren’t at the races on Saturday, but to be fair to them, they had a number of injuries to deal with, including one to Darren Randolph.
Of course, this will have hugely benefitted Leeds, but it may have greater effects down the line for Klich.
The Pole seemed to have regained his confidence in front of goal as he finally netted from outside the area after making those types of strikes his trademark last year.
Indeed, fans made a chant about his long-range scoring last season, but it seems as if his self-belief had deserted him as he made comments alluding to the fact that last season’s ten-goal haul was a bit of a fluke.
“It’s going to be difficult to repeat that… I was surprised… but I’m trying my best & to play like last season. The only thing I’m missing is goals because I play a very similar game. I try to cooperate with the front 3.” He said.
You could see that in his game as well as he’s been taking fewer shots per 90 mins from outside the box than he did last term.
Fortunately, Saturday’s strike could help him rediscover his confidence. However, things could have been different if Randolph was between the sticks.
The Irishman was deemed the best stopper in the division last term as he made the Team of the Year, and while his replacement was unable to get anywhere near Klich’s strike as he didn’t even dive for it, Randolph may have had a chance at saving it.
Instead, the Pole netted from distance and wheeled away in celebration, and that could be a huge confidence booster that may not have happened if it weren’t for an injury to Boro’s number one.
