When Sunderland were relegated from the Championship last season, not many of their supporters – or probably new manager Jack Ross – would have expected Bryan Oviedo to still be with them for their League One campaign.
The 28-year-old should be in the prime of his career given his age, and having played for Costa Rica at the 2018 World Cup in Russia it was probably a surprise that he didn’t secure a move away from the Stadium of Light before the transfer window slammed shut for many countries on August 31.
However, unlike Papy Djilobodji and Didier Ndong, the left-sided player is well in favour under Ross and has featured in five of their seven league matches – missing one through injury as well as the clash against Fleetwood Town last weekend as he was away on international duty.

Meanwhile, summer addition Reece James would surely have been hoping to play regularly having left Championship new-boys Wigan Athletic following the expiry of his contract at the DW Stadium, but it hasn’t been the case thus far.
In fact, the 24-year-old may well have fallen further down the pecking order after Denver Hume started ahead of him against Joey Barton’s men last time out, going on to impress in the full-back role on his bow for the Wearside outfit.
Previous to that, we decided to ask Sunderland fans to vote on our poll to see whether they wanted James to start ahead of Oviedo, and a huge 84% said they wouldn’t, as you can see below.
