Alonso’s return to Madrid marks a significant milestone in his managerial career. After leaving Bayer Leverkusen this summer, where he orchestrated one of the most impressive Bundesliga title runs, ending Bayern Munich’s long-standing domestic dominance in the 2023-24 season, the Spaniard now takes on the mammoth task of reviving a Real Madrid side that fell flat last season.

Alonso's time at Leverkusen earned him widespread acclaim for tactical innovation and player development, helping shape a young squad into title winners. That success has placed massive expectations on Alonso as he steps into the role previously held by Carlo Ancelotti, who left the club following a disappointing, trophyless 2024–25 season and has now taken over as head coach of the Brazil national team.
WHAT XABI ALONSO SAID
While Alonso is preparing for the intense spotlight of Madrid, Mascherano, who is now managing Inter Miami, was asked about his former teammate’s new position. Though full of praise for Alonso’s character and coaching potential, the Argentine couldn't help but tease him due to his history with Barcelona.
"I haven't spoken to him," Mascherano said. "He was one of the best players I played with throughout my career. I don't wish him the best because he's at Real Madrid, but I'm sure he'll be a great coach for the club. He did an excellent job at Bayer Leverkusen. He's a great person, and I had the privilege of playing alongside him for three years."
AFPWHAT NEXT FOR ALONSO & MASCHERANO?
There will be no gentle start to Alonso’s tenure. His first major test comes quickly as Real Madrid begin their Club World Cup campaign on Wednesday, June 18, facing Al-Hilal. Whereas, Mascherano will be on the sidelines when the Herons take on Al-Ahly in the tournament opener.
