The 35-year-old has seen her summer schedule cleared on the back of a surprising omission from Emma Hayes’ plans for a gold medal bid in Paris. Despite being a World Cup winner with 224 caps and 123 goals to her name, Morgan will be left at home when the United States head for France.

She is making peace with that, as others ask questions of why her vast experience was not embraced in another bid for tangible success. Hayes is starting to build for the future, with only five players aged 30 or over named in her 18-player party for Paris.
