Crystal Palace fans have taken to Twitter to react after TEAMtalk reported that the Eagles are ready to listen to offers for James McCarthy, with four Premier League clubs interested in a deal for the midfielder.
Newcastle, Aston Villa, Burnley and Bournemouth are believed to be keen on a loan move for the player who only arrived at Selhurst Park back in the summer in a £3m deal from Everton, although the south Londoners would only sanction a temporary departure if it involved an agreement for a permanent transfer in the summer.
McCarthy has somewhat struggled for game time under Roy Hodgson since his arrival from the Toffees, making just four Premier League starts this season, as well as 12 appearances from the bench.
TEAMtalk add that Hodgson’s side are keen to do business in the market themselves this month, so moving McCarthy on would help them do that.
This would surely be a bizarre move for Palace to sanction, seeing as the Republic of Ireland international has barely been given a chance since his arrival at the club just a matter of months ago – Hodgson also raved about the 29-year-old following the 2-1 win over West Ham at the London Stadium.
“Very good. Very, very good. He’s a good player. I knew that when we signed him. He is a very good footballer. He is very technical and his understanding of the game, his awareness, is very good.”
Nevertheless, it is a transfer update that has been reported by TEAMtalk, so let’s see how the Palace fans reacted to the news…
Understandably, the first Palace supporter of this bunch expressed their confusion at this news, writing “what are we actually doing” while another also mentioned that this update on McCarthy was “so confusing”.
Elsewhere, these two supporters both saw fit to mention the awful injury crisis that has plagued the Palace squad right now, and made the valid point that the Eagles would be mad to further weaken their ranks by sanctioning a departure for the Irishman.
One said that they’d be “amazed” if Palace were prepared to let anyone leave this month, while another asked “why would we do this?!” upon hearing the news.
Call yourself a Premier League expert? How much did each of these big-money January signings cost?
Lastly, another pair of Palace fans reiterated our aforementioned point that Hodgson has spoken glowingly of McCarthy, which would make an exit for the former Wigan man seem even stranger given the 72-year-old’s clear admiration of him.
In other news, these Crystal Palace fans have reacted after a “disruptive” player who “Roy will like” is linked with a move to Selhurst Park…
