This season has long been expected to be Wirtz's last in a Leverkusen jersey due to the 22-year-old's fantastic form for club and country which as attracted interest from the likes of Real Madrid and Manchester City as well as Bavarian giants. The Germany international confirmed he is ready to leave his current club in the next transfer window in order to get out of his "comfort zone".

According to , Wirtz and Bayern are in total agreement and the former Koln youth academy player has no intention of accepting an offer from City or Madrid – despite Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso being linked to the latter after confirming his imminent exit. However, Leverkusen would rather not sell to their direct rivals and talks between the two clubs have not yet begun, with Bayern reportedly prepared to pay €125 million (£106m/$142m) to land him.

Wirtz's contract at Leverkusen runs until 2027 and although the player would rather move this summer, he could end up staying put for another season in order to leave for a cheaper fee in the summer of 2026.
