Glasgow Rangers have certainly hit the jackpot over Alfredo Morelos, with his value increasing substantially following his arrival at the club nearly six years ago.
Pedro Caixinha brought him to Ibrox during the summer of 2017 as he sought to build a team which would be capable of challenging their cross-town rivals for the Premiership title.
The Colombian cost £1m – which for a then 20-year-old who had only moved to Europe one year previously – represented a gamble, especially when the club were looking to not waste precious funds in the transfer market.
However, 46 goals for HJK Helsinki was an excellent return, and his signing has turned out to be one of the finest in the Light Blues’ recent history.
How much is Alfredo Morelos worth?
Up until the beginning of the 2022/23 campaign, Morelos had scored largely forgettable tenure at the club.
The striker’s contract is Michael Beale will be hoping to convince him to sign a new deal in order to be part of the new era at the club.
The 26-year-old has enjoyed success so far under the Englishman and benefitted massively when he was a first-team coach under Steven Gerrard, none more so than during the 2020/21 season.
Morelos was at his devastating best in that campaign as his 12 Premiership goals helped power Rangers to their first league title in a decade, averaging a Sofascore rating of 7.12/10 in the process. That ranked him as the club’s ninth-best performer, proving just how high standards were at Ibrox during that unbeaten season.
Journalist Jordan Campbell has previously dubbed the striker “lethal”, and there is no doubt that, barring the addition of an exceptional replacement, the club could suffer without the Colombian in their side.
His performances of late have seen Football Transfers value him at €11.6m (£10.3m), and if he does go on to sign a contract extension, this figure could potentially rise further.
Beale will surely be in no hurry to sell if Morelos is willing to commit to Rangers during the prime years of his career, but if his form drastically improves and there is interest from the continent, the club could cash in and make a substantial profit on their initial financial outlay.
